John started learning Korean percussion in Grade 1 in Korea. After immigrating to Canada in 2000, he continued studying Korean percussion under Chris Baek, the director of Samulnori Canada. In 2008, John played with the World Music Players, a group mixing Korean and Western music. In 2012, he was a part of the AllTV Culture Caravan, performing in all 10 provinces, showcasing Korean rhythm. In 2017, John became the president of the Korean Traditional Music Association of Canada, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to spreading Korean music and enriching the Canadian musical landscape. He plays Daegeum for the fusion group Haneum. John will perform songs on the Daegeum, a Korean flute, and traditional Korean rhythms on the Janggu.
